Following the attacks on 9/11 former President Bill Clinton proffered this gem, "Those of us who come from various European lineages are not blameless. Indeed, in the first Crusade, when the Christian soldiers took Jerusalem.."
Ahmar Akmed of American University in Washington D.C suggested that the Crusades, "Create a long memory of European onslaught."
In 1999 European Protestants took part in an "apology walk" started in Germany and ended up in Jerusalem. With "I apologize" written in Arabic.
Some key points to remember is that the Muslim world was the true agressor.
1) The earliest contact between Muslim and European world was the request sent to 7th century Byzantine ruler Heraclius asking him to "convert and be safe."

15) The monastery of Monte Cassino in Italy destroyed 884.
16) Sicily was finally conquered in 902 and Muslim domination would last for 200 years.
17) Muslims control all the passes in the Alps between France and Italy, cutting off passage between the two countries in 911.
18) Muslim forces cross the Pyrenees, enter Gascony, and reach as far as the gates of Toulouse in 920.

26) Seljuk Turks capture Nicaea. It would change hands three more times, finally returning to the Turks 1078-1086.
27) Pope Urban II opens the Council of Clermont where ambassadors from Constantinople bring a letter from emperor Alexius I Comnenus, asking help against the Muslims in 1095. "God wills it is declared and the Crusades begin.
